Visit Wanaka
Set on the southern shores of New Zealand's fourth largest lake, Wanaka township sits at the entry to Mount Aspiring National Park, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps mountain range.
A wide range of attractions and adventure sports are all within easy reach of Wanaka. Take a scenic cruise on the lake, sample locally made wines, or fish at one of the easily accessible lakeside spots. Alternatively, venture into the hills and mountains surrounding Wanaka. Mountain biking, tramping and climbing are all available in this area. Wanaka is also one of New Zealand's top ski destinations, with four ski and snowboarding areas nearby. Wanaka township is a quiet, relaxed lakeside resort with excellent restaurants, cafes and shops.
What To Do in Wanaka
Lake Wanaka is the gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park, one of the world's most spectacular alpine regions. Trekking, fly fishing, golf, mountain biking, rock climbing and jet boating are all on the doorstep.
Wanaka Events
Every other autumn, the spectacular Wanaka air show 'Warbirds Over Wanaka' attracts thousands of spectators. On alternate years, the Southern Lakes Festival of Colour features a dynamic programme of arts, dance, theatre and music. For golf fans, a number of world-class courses are located within driving distance.
Vineyards & Wine Tours
At 45° south, Central Otago vineyards form the world's southern-most wine-making region. The vines are planted amongst spectacular alpine scenery and are the highest in New Zealand, with most vineyards located between 200 and 400 metres above sea level.
Although small, Central Otago is a rapidly developing wine-making region, with an international reputation for the best Pinot Noir in the world. Now with over 45 wineries in the region, Central Otago has earned its reputation as one of the premier New World wine producing areas. Many vineyards offer cellar door tastings and sales, with restaurants set amongst the vines and stunning views.
All the Central Otago wineries are within easy reach of Lake Wanaka, either as part of an organised tour with experienced wine guides or as a self-drive exploration. Visit Rippon or Maude Winery.
Ski Wanaka - Cardona, Treble Cone & Snow Farm
Wanaka is home to some of New Zealand 's best skiing and snowboarding. Enthusiasts from around the world flock to the three Wanaka ski-fields of Cardrona, Treble Cone and the Snow Farm Park, all within 45 minutes’ drive of town.
Skiing Wanaka can be different every day. Ride a lift to the slopes or chutes best suited to your ability, find your own private powder run with the help of a guide and helicopter, or take the armchair approach, mulled wine in hand, and watch others from a sunny ski field deck.
Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow - Easter Weekend
Every second year, the planes take to the sky in the Southern Hemisphere's largest air show, Warbirds Over Wanaka. Over three days Lake Wanaka becomes centre stage for an extravaganza of aerial action, featuring the classic aircraft of yesteryear together with the modern jets of today.
Wanaka Must-Do’s
When you are here you need to check out Puzzle World, the Lavender Farm and the world-famous Cinema Paradiso. Make sure you get up Mt Iron or Roy’s Peak and snap a pic of that Wanaka Tree. The Wanaka shops offer something a little different, from high-end fashion to that special little something. Look at the art, the craft market and the gift stores.
